Contemporary Australian Dining · Southbank, Melbourne
Seasonal produce. Considered technique. A room that feels like yours from the moment you arrive on the banks of the Yarra.
Who We Are
BYZ Southbank opened in 2017 with one conviction: that Victoria's produce deserved a room as beautiful as the ingredients themselves. Seven years later, that conviction has deepened into a philosophy.
We cook without pretension. Our kitchen speaks directly: here is the fish, caught this morning at Port Phillip Bay. Here is the lamb, raised in the Grampians by a family we've visited twice a year for a decade. The technique is invisible. The ingredient is the star.
The room seats 68. Every table has a view of the Yarra — because the river is part of what we're serving.

Every dish is a question: what does this ingredient want to be today?
Born in Hobart and trained in Melbourne and Barcelona, Elena returned to Victoria with a language for produce that she'd spent a decade building. Her cooking is restrained where it needs to be and generous when generosity matters. She runs her kitchen with the logic of a composer: every element has a role, and nothing stays if it doesn't earn its place.

Your Evening Awaits
Reservations are strongly recommended, particularly on Thursday through Saturday evenings. We keep a small selection of walk-in seats at the bar each night.
Guests in Their Own Words
The most honest restaurant I've been to in Melbourne. Every ingredient had a story and we were told it. The duck was extraordinary.
Elena's restraint is what sets BYZ apart from the crowd. She knows when to stop adding, and that's rarer than any technique.
We celebrated our 10th anniversary here and the team made us feel like royalty — without the stiffness. Just genuinely wonderful people.
